Seems every family has their own favorite Apple Crisp recipe. We all make it like our Grandmas, Mothers, and even Great-Grandmas did. That’s always the best way, right? Even though we also like to change things up a bit, it’s nice to keep a simple, uncomplicated recipe for Apple Crisp handy. One of the greatest ways to change your Apple Crisp a little is to choose different types of apples. I usually prefer the really tart apples, but am not against using a nice sweet variety either. It’s all good, and that’s what matters.

I get my fair share of calls for potluck meals and like to have a couple frugal fruit recipes ready to throw together when I need to. The classic dishes always go over better than any of the other “new fangled” recipes, especially at a potluck. Potlucks are a chance to show off your favorite classics and compare them to others. It’s interesting when you line-up all the Apple Crisp dishes and see all the cooks busily watching and hoping that their’s gets devoured first. Woe to the dish that is left untouched. Competition can be quite keen at a potluck!

I recently purchased this Romertopf Round Clay Bread Pan for my wife as she is getting into bread baking in order to give us a healthy alternative to processed breads. Well she absolutely loves the pan and I love the smell of the fresh bread cooking. I bought this particular pan because it has a very unique look that I knew my wife would really appreciate. My wife tells me that Romertopf clay is supposed to be a very old way of cooking for more traditional breads, and judging from the bread she has been making they clearly had it right back then as the crust is perfect!

There is something special about having fresh homemade bread served up in one of these pans, I appreciate it far more than I thought I would, and my wife is happy. Who could ask for more? This bread baking pan is the perfect size for a good sized round loaf of bread for a small dinner party or gathering. The price was really good for such a high quality clay pan and it looks and feels much more expensive,. It’s definitely one of the best gifts I’ve bought in years.

If the only time you’ve ever eaten French Onion soup is in a restaurant, you are in for a treat. The typical French Onion soup that is offered by most restaurants is a mediocre rendition of homemade crock pot French onion soup. Homemade French Onion soup is richer, beefier, swimming with onions, and topped with your favorite bread and Parmesan cheese. What could be tastier? When you control the ingredients, you know it’s good.

My family has a number of favorite crock pot recipes, mostly chilis, soups, stews, and stroganoffs. Of all the soups we make, French Onion is the most surprising. Who would think that just onion, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, bread and cheese would make a filling and satisfying meal? When I was growing up, we had some type of French Onion soup at least once or twice a month. The cheese we used on top would vary depending on what was in the refrigerator, but the classic recipe remained the same. For an adult dinnertime, try this rich dark soup with a glass of red wine. You’ll feel like you’ve just dined at the finest five-star restaurant.

The holidays are here and that means baking season has kicked into high gear again in our house. Between trying to make enough batches of all of the kid’s favorite cookies as well as mom and hubby’s favorite pies, it’s hard to know where to start. There’s been many a time I’ve run out of the pans to bake them in and had to postpone some of the treats for another day. Finally, I’d had enough and decided it was time to make sure that didn’t happen again this year. I went ahead and purchased a great 12 piece bakeware set made by Baker’s Secret.

I am so glad I purchased this great kitchen bakeware – it has just the right amount of the pans I need to get all of my family’s favorite baked goods done in plenty of time for the holidays. The set includes 2 pie plates, 2 round cake pans, 2 loaf pans, 2 cookie sheets, an oblong cake pan, a muffin pan, and even a pizza pan, so I can make a delicious homemade pizza too. It’s truly a perfect combination of baking pans for my family.

My family gets together on Sunday evenings for dinner quite a bit and most of the time we have a pot luck type meal. In other words each of us women brings a dish to share. Since my sister-in-law is a vegetarian, I try to bring something she can eat as well. Bean dishes seem like a good idea since they have quite a bit of protein in them. This past weekend I made some vegetarian boston baked beans that turned out great.

When I started looking for different bean recipes, I was surprised how many of them had some sort of meat or animal fat in them. I guess it is needed for flavor. Since then I’ve come across a couple of vegetarian recipes websites that have some good ideas and I’ve even modified some recipes and used olive oil or vegetable bullion and various seasonings to make the dish vegetarian. It’s a lot of fun to try different recipes and make all these delicious bean dishes. I know my sister-in-law appreciates the extra meal choice for her and the rest of the family seems to enjoy them as well.

My favorite dessert is banana pudding. Not the kind my Swedish, Iowa mother made for me; instant pudding from a box and a couple of vanilla wafers on the side. I mean good old-fashioned Southern banana pudding. I met a man from the South and he taught me how to make cold banana pudding (there’s also warm, but that’s too Southern for me).

I’m not going to share the “recipe” because there’s really no such word in Southern cooking. Southern banana pudding is all about the layering. You need 3 boxes of banana pudding mix, several bananas, and vanilla wafers, some crumbled and some whole. Crumbling the vanilla wafers is a good project for the children that want to help. Now before you begin, make the pudding according to the instructions on the box.

Here’s how you build your banana pudding dessert. Start with a bowl, preferably clear so that your admirers can see the layers through the side of the bowl, and begin layering as follows.Layer of whole Vanilla wafers, if you have a clear bowl, set up one row along the side, then a layer of banana slices, then a layer of banana pudding with sliced banana slices already mixed in the pudding, then crumbled wafers, than banana slices repeating until you end with pudding on the top, a few more banana slices and a sprinkling of wafers for the final touch. Enjoy !!!

Omaha’s Wine is made from grapes grown directly from the state of Nebraska. Nebraska’s oldest winery was founded in 1994. Currently there are about 20 commercial wineries operating across Nebraska. The vast majority of these wineries are small and sell most of their wine to tourists who visit the winery.

The wine and grape industry in Nebraska began in the late 19th century, with most of the vineyards located in the counties of southeastern Nebraska. The wine and grape industry in Nebraska was dormant until the mid 1980s; the passage of the Nebraska Farm Wineries Act by the Nebraska Legislature in 1986 increased the amount of wine that a Nebraska winery could produce from 200 US gallons to 50,000 US gallons.

Even in the early 1990s, fewer than 10 acres of vineyards were in cultivation in the state.
