The Best Banana Pudding – Southern Style

Author: admin  //  Category: Cooking, Food & Wine

My favorite dessert is banana pudding. Not the kind my Swedish, Iowa mother made for me; instant pudding from a box and a couple of vanilla wafers on the side. I mean good old-fashioned Southern banana pudding. I met a man from the South and he taught me how to make cold banana pudding (there’s also warm, but that’s too Southern for me).

I’m not going to share the “recipe” because there’s really no such word in Southern cooking. Southern banana pudding is all about the layering. You need 3 boxes of banana pudding mix, several bananas, and vanilla wafers, some crumbled and some whole. Crumbling the vanilla wafers is a good project for the children that want to help. Now before you begin, make the pudding according to the instructions on the box.

Here’s how you build your banana pudding dessert. Start with a bowl, preferably clear so that your admirers can see the layers through the side of the bowl, and begin layering as follows.Layer of whole Vanilla wafers, if you have a clear bowl, set up one row along the side, then a layer of banana slices, then a layer of banana pudding with sliced banana slices already mixed in the pudding, then crumbled wafers, than banana slices repeating until you end with pudding on the top, a few more banana slices and a sprinkling of wafers for the final touch. Enjoy !!!
